The Importance of Salah

24Feb09

Allah ta’ala says in Surah Al-Dhariyat ayah 55:

“And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.”

Then in ayah 56 he says:

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

So that is what this post is going to be about. The worship of Allah azza wa jal.

In a hadith in Tirmidhi, the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said), “The covenant which is between us and them (ie the disbelievers) is salah, and whoever abandoned it has disbelieved.”

In the Musnad of Imam Ahmad it is narrated, “Whoever guards [salah] strictly will have light, evidence (of his faith) and deliverance on the day of resurrection. And whoever does not guard it strictly will have neither light, nor evidence (of his faith) nor deliverance; and he will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection with Pharoah, Haman, Qarun, and Ubayy bin Khalaf.” [Musnad Ahmad]

“The first deed for which a man will be called to account for on the Day of Resurrection will be his salah. If it is found to be good, he will be safe and successful; but if it is defective, he will be unfortunate and a loser. If any shortcoming is found in the obligatory salah, the Glorious and Exalted Lord will call to see whether his slave has offered any voluntary salah so that the deficience in the obligatory salah may be made up by it. Then the rest of his actions will be treated in the same manner.” [Tirmidhi]

“He who performs salah before the sunrise and sunset (ie fajr and asr) shall not enter the fire at all.” [Muslim]

And finally, some verses from the Qur’an speaking about those who did not pray.

“[And asking them], ‘What put you into Saqar [hell]?’ They will say, ‘We were not of those who prayed.’ “[Al-Mudathir:42-43]

Another verse: “Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up salah and have followed (their) lsts. So they will be thrown into hell. [19:59]
