A Surprising Reaction to the Quran
When the message of RasulAllah sal Allahu alayhi wa salam began to have an effect on the Quraish, they called one of the first meetings in Dar Al-Nadwah about what was to be done with this man. They had a long argument, and Utbah ibn Rabee’ (one of the elders, noblemen) said, “Have any of you tried talking to him?”
They said, “No, it has only been ridicule, mocking, and cursing.”
So Utbah replied, “Let me go to him and just have a talk. See why he’s saying these things, try to convince him to return to the way he was.” So he set out to meet RasulAllah sal Allahu alayhi wa salam and began to talk to him about what was happening. Then Utbah asked the Prophet (sal Allahu alahyi wa salam) who was better, “You or Hashim? You or AbdulMuttalib?” The Arabs prided themselves on ancestry, and they were like demi-gods in the way they respected them. (So if he were to say that he is better, then it is the wrong time to say such a thing. – this shows the wisdom of dawah. If he says they are better, it is kufr.) RasulAllah sal Allahu alayhi wa salam remained silent and let Utbah assume whatever he wanted to presume.
Then Utbah offered him money, power (to be king, even though they didn’t have a king. They were willing to unite all the tribes – that’s how much they hated Islam), and money; RasulAllah sal Allahu alayhi wa salam didn’t even dignify that with a response.
Then RasulAllah sal Allahu alayhi wa salam asked him if he was done. Then told him to sit down and recited
As the punishments of Aad and Thamud were being spoken of, Utbah jumped and put his hand on the mouth of RasulAllah sal Allahu alayhi wa salam and said, “I beg you to stop.” And then he ran back to Dar Al-Nadwah, pale and shattered.
The people there said, “By Allah, this is not the same man that left us.”
Utbah said, “Oh my people, I have heard a speech the likes of which I have never heard before. I swear by Allah it is not magic, nor is it poetry, nor is it sorcery. O group of Quraish, listen to me. Wallahi, his speech shall cause a revolution. This Quran will become a news to the people, a subject of a lot of talk.” He went on to convince them not to do anything.
Think about it. What is your reaction when the Quran is being recited? Do you even understand what Allah ta’ala is saying to you? If you don’t, then what are you waiting for? Don’t you know that the Quran is more valuable than your most valued possession?
