The Straight Path

In surah Al-Fatihah, we ask Allah to guide us to the straight path, to the path of those whom he has blessed.

There is a great gem in this. Notice how Allah said the word blessed in the past tense. So we are supposed to take our role models from the past, because they have already passed away. They lived their life and passed the test. The people who are alive today may or may not get the seal of approval from Allah. They could be good today but not tomorrow. There is no certainty. But the people from the past are concrete role models.

Of course, the ultimate role models are the prophets, those who confirm the truth of the prophets (the companions), the shuhuda, and the righteous.
