Alī bin Ḥusayn bin Shaqīq said, “I heard Ibn Mubārak saying, ‘First of the knowledge is the (correct) intention; then is the listening (to scholars); then is the understanding; then is the memorization; then is the action (upon the knowledge learnt); and then is the spreading (of the knowledge).’” [Jāmi‘ Bayān ul-‘Ilm wa Faḍlihi by al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ‘Abdil Barr رحمه الله/540]
